2019-20 Frisco Varsity Gold wins Texas State Championships
Congratulations to the Frisco Varsity Gold hockey team for winning the 2019-20 Texas State Hockey Championships.
Frisco knocks off SJ Bosco, 5-4, in Nationals Opener
Zach Warhoftig scored midway through the second period and Weston Walker made 22 saves to help Frisco hold off St. John Bosco, 5-4, in the opener of the 2019 USA Hockey High School National Championship in Cleveland, Ohio.
Warhoftig pounced on the rebound of a blast by defenseman Josh Wright-Perry and slid it past a sprawling George Gutierrez at 9:22 of the middle frame to give Frisco a 5-2 lead. After that it all Walker as Bosco mounted a furious third-period comeback against a rusty Texas squad that hadn't played since winning the city championship four weeks ago. Although he was beaten twice, the senior keeper was magnificent, stopping 15 shots in the final stanza to preserve the win.
The game had the look of a rout early on. Marcus Russell got Frisco on the board quickly, beating a screened Gutierrez with a rocket from the point just 51 seconds into the contest. After Bosco tied it up, Frisco got goals from Cullen Hogan, Leyton Andres and Christian Bachman to open up a seemingly comfortable lead midway through the game. But the California champs refused to go away quietly and it took some exceptional work by Frisco's penalty killers, a perfect nine for nine on the day, and some stellar work by Walker to seal the victory.
On Friday Frisco takes on Zionsville, 5-1 losers in their opener, looking to seal a berth in Sunday's quarterfinal.

Frisco wins bronze at 2019 USA Hockey High School Nationals
It wasn't the color they were gunning for, but Frisco's Varsity Gold squad is coming back to Texas with a hard-earned bronze medal from the 2019 USA Hockey High School National Championship.
Frisco dropped a 2-0 thriller to Colorado's state champs Boulder Monarch in Sunday's semifinal.
The bronze is Frisco's second national medal in three years. The team claimed gold in 2017.
The two evenly matched squads battled for every inch of ice through two scoreless periods before Boulder broke through with a pair goals early in the third. Frisco's offense dominated the rest of the period, generating multiple chances, but was unable to secure the equalizer.
Cam Pendleton, making his second start of the day, was solid between the pipes for Frisco, stopping 28 of 30 shots he faced.
Frisco finished the tournament with a 4-1 record, knocking off the champions from California, Indiana, Ohio and Wyoming.
It was announced after the game that the team will be honored by the City of Frisco during a council meeting on May 7. Details of the event will be forwarded shortly.
Well done, boys! Looking forward to another impressive result when DFW hosts the national tournament in 2020.

City of Frisco honors Varsity Gold Champs
The 2018-19 season officially came to a close with a day dedicated to our Varsity Gold squad.
The team was honored during Tuesday's meeting of Frisco city council, where Mayor Jeff Cheney proclaimed May 7 as "Frisco Ice Hockey Varsity Gold Team Day" in recognition of our 2019 Texas state championship and third-place finish at Nationals.
Our boys were awarded custom-fit Justin Hats -- a good look combined with those national medals -- and a personal copy of the proclamation. We reciprocated with signed team photos and FIHA polos.
Our deepest thanks to City of Frisco TX - City Hall, and especially Mayor Jeff Cheney and Deputy Mayor Pro Tem John Keating, for this tribute and for their enduring support of FIHA. We don't say it enough, but we couldn't do what we do as an organization without them.
Moments like this remind us what a privilege it is to represent this city and we couldn't be more proud to do it. Now it's time to put in the work so we can earn a return visit in 2020!
Frisco throttles Gillette, 4-1, advances to semis
A relentless forecheck and depth scoring made the difference as Frisco hammered Gillette, 4-1, at the USA Hockey High School National Championship on Sunday.
Cameron Wee scored twice to pace Frisco's attack. Roman DiDomizio and Stefan Kruger added singles. Kyle Russell chipped in with three assists.
Goaltender Cam Pendleton had a relatively easy morning, stopping 10 of 11 shots he faced, while Frisco blistered Gillette's defense for 54 shots.
The win moves Frisco into a Final Four matchup with a deep and skilled squad from Boulder, Colorado on Sunday afternoon.
Frisco rallies to defeat Newark, 5-4
We wondered how this team would react when facing adversity. Now we know.
Frisco went down 1-0 -- the first time the full squad had trailed all season -- and blew a 3-1 lead late in the second to go down 4-3, but rallied twice to knock off the Newark Generals, 5-4.
The win gave Frisco a perfect 3-0 record in round-robin play and secured first place in the USA pool, setting up a battle with the Gillette Wild (Wyoming) in Sunday's quarterfinal.
Special teams were the difference for Frisco. Stefan Kruger tallied twice on the power play in the first period to erase the early 1-0 deficit. C.J. Bachman and Michael Ellis each scored shorthanded to finish the comeback after the home state Generals scored three times in the second.
Cullen Hogan added an even-strength goal late in the first.
The penalty kill was perfect on the afternoon, going seven-for-seven.
Cam Pendleton and Weston Walker combined to make 30 saves, including a penalty shot early in the first, to silence the boisterous crowd supporting the Ohio champs.

Frisco beats Zionsville, 4-1
After some sluggish play in the opener, Frisco found its legs in a 4-1 win over Zionsville Friday at the USA Hockey National High School Championship.
With wins in its first two games, Frisco secured a spot in Sunday's quarterfinal round.
Frisco's special teams keyed the victory over Indiana's state champs. Roman DiDomizio opened the scoring with a power play marker at 4:02 of the first. Leyton Andres added a crucial shorthanded tally early in the third as Zionsville pressed for the equalizer. Michael Kennedy and Michael Ellis added singles.
Cam Pendleton made 17 stops in his first start of the tourney.
